Extracorporeal shock wave therapy means treatment delivered from outside the body. ESWT is frequently used as an umbrella term. In older research and on many current websites, it can include both focused shockwave and radial pressure-wave treatment. When a page says only ESWT, ask which device generates it.

Focused shockwave, FSW or F-SWT

Focused systems concentrate acoustic energy at a selected depth. They may generate waves electromagnetically, electrohydraulically or piezoelectrically. The focus and treatment parameters depend on the particular equipment and clinical plan.

Radial pressure wave, RPW or R-SWT

Radial systems generally create their highest energy at the applicator and disperse it into tissue. Some practices call this radial shockwave. Current terminology recommendations distinguish it from a focused shockwave even though both may be discussed in the same family of treatments.

EPAT
